Bill Cox, a lifelong McKinney resident and former City Council member, is one of two candidates in the runoff election to become McKinney’s next mayor. With experience in city government and business, Cox says his candidacy is focused on balancing growth, ensuring public safety, and keeping taxes low.

He says his campaign is about “honoring McKinney’s heritage while preparing for its future,” and emphasizes financial discipline, infrastructure investment, and community engagement as key pillars of his platform.

Priorities: Safety, Infrastructure, and Growth Management

“Our citizens deserve to be safe, at all times,” he says. “That means hiring the best in public safety and paying competitive wages and benefits.”

He also stresses the need for state and federal coordination: “Our roads are already behind due to delays. We must work with Austin and Washington to make McKinney roads a priority.”

On taxes, Cox calls for disciplined growth: “While the tax bill is a complicated formula, McKinney must do our part to keep taxes low—through thoughtful, commercial development.”

Vision for McKinney

“Maintaining our unique charm while growing at the same time are the two ingredients I feel are most important,” Cox says. “Managing our city’s assets to their highest and best use is a priority—but never losing focus on what matters most: safety.”

Cox says engaging residents in decision-making is key to preserving McKinney’s quality of life as it expands.

Approach to Community Engagement

“Going out on residents’ turf and meeting with all citizens of McKinney—talking and engaging about the issues. That’s how we make our home a better place to live.”

Economic Development Strategy

“Working through our economic development corporation to identify and recruit the right business growth is key. But we must also ensure that development is balanced, workforce-ready, and that our neighborhoods remain safe, enjoyable, and family-friendly.”

On Public Safety and Core Services

“Being on council is about providing core services like safety and maintaining high customer satisfaction,” he says. “That includes budgeting for training, facilities, benefits, and pay that keep our top public safety talent in McKinney.”
