Everyday Place, Extraordinary Legacy: Post Office Renaming Proposed for Officer Dawson

In the heart of Greenville, a familiar building where neighbors mail letters and holiday cards may soon carry the name of a fallen hero.

On February 5, 2025, Congressman Keith Self (TX-03) introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to rename the U.S. Postal Service facility at 2600 Wesley Street as the “Cooper Dawson Post Office Building.” The proposal honors Greenville Police Officer Cooper Dawson, who was killed in the line of duty on November 25, 2024.

Officer Dawson, 27, was fatally shot during a traffic stop that escalated into a foot pursuit. According to officials, Dawson was ambushed and shot multiple times but managed to return fire and stop the assailant. His bravery and final act of service deeply impacted the Greenville Police Department and the broader community.

If passed, the bill would give permanent recognition to Officer Dawson’s sacrifice, ensuring that his legacy remains a visible and lasting part of the city he served. Renaming a post office in honor of a fallen public servant is a solemn and meaningful tradition, and one that reflects the deep respect of a grateful nation.

In a time when political divisions often dominate headlines, Congressman Self’s effort to advance this tribute stands out as a unifying and compassionate act. These types of renamings are generally non-controversial and tend to receive bipartisan support in both the House, Senate and no doubt our community.

The bill must still pass both chambers of Congress and be signed into law by the President before the renaming becomes official. If successful, the dedication ceremony would take place after the U.S. Postal Service completes the administrative process.

For the Greenville community, the proposal is more than just a name change—it’s a reminder of courage, duty, and the ultimate price paid by one of their own. As the legislation moves forward, residents wait with hope that Officer Dawson’s name will soon grace a place of everyday life, reminding all who pass through of a hero who stood for service and sacrifice.
