Keith Self Finally Speaks on Weston Parade Flag — Questions Remain

COLLIN COUNTY — More than a month after a profane political flag appeared on a July 4 parade float carrying the wife and campaign director of U.S. Rep. Keith Self (R-TX03), the Congressman addressed the incident publicly for the first time at an August town hall in Prosper. His remarks have prompted further questions from some residents about what happened and how his campaign has handled the fallout.

The incident began during Weston’s Independence Day celebration, when a parade float decorated with patriotic July 4th décor and a “Self for Congress” campaign sign  displayed a large flag reading: “TRUMP 2024 – F** YOUR FEELINGS.” Riding on the float were Tracy Self, the Congressman’s wife, and Michelle Bishop, director of Rep. Self’s campaign activities in Collin County, both wearing Team Self campaign shirts. Photographs taken at the event showed the flag fully visible to paradegoers, including children along the route.

At the time, Self was in Washington, D.C., attending a White House ceremony. City officials later confirmed that the float was not organized by his campaign and said Mrs. Self and Bishop were invited to ride mid-route while leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Weston Council Member Maria Whitworth stated the flag was not visible during staging and that, had it been seen, the float would have been pulled from the parade.

Keith Self Town Hall Response

At the Prosper town hall, a resident from Texas’ 3rd Congressional District — who asked to remain anonymous — questioned why Self had not publicly addressed or condemned the incident.

In his answer, Self reiterated that the float was not part of his campaign and emphasized that the City of Weston had apologized to him for what happened. He also suggested the possibility that the flag could have been “planted” to create controversy. “I don’t know what happened,” Self said. “It’s possible someone put that there for a reason.”

During the exchange, Self did not disavow the flag’s language, issue an apology to constituents who might have been offended, or state whether such messaging was appropriate for a family parade.

Following the event, the resident told TX3DNews that a member of Self’s staff privately suggested to her that the flag might have been planted by Democrats. “I had doubts about that explanation,” she said, noting it did not match what she had seen or heard from others connected to the event. Individuals directly associated with the float have told TX3DNews that the flag was placed by Trump supporters, not Democrats.

Visibility and Awareness

Keith Self’s campaign has said that neither Mrs. Self nor Bishop saw the flag during the parade. However, photographs reviewed by TX3DNews show the flag in plain view as both rode on the float.

That discrepancy has led some residents to question how two senior members of the Congressman’s political team could have been unaware of what was displayed just feet away. Others have asked why the Congressman did not acknowledge whether his team would have stepped off the float had they seen the flag.

Community Reaction

Images of the float have been widely shared in local forums and social media groups, where opinions have varied. Some residents have criticized the display as inappropriate for a family-oriented Independence Day event. One TX3DNews reader called it “shameful” and “violent political rhetoric at its worst,” urging District 3 and Collin County residents to demand that Self condemn the language and apologize. Others say the lack of a public disavowal leaves uncertainty about where the Congressman stands on the matter.

Calls for Clarification

TX3DNews has again reached out to Rep. Self and his staff to address the new information raised at the Prosper town hall, including his reference to a possible “plant,” the staff member’s statement to the resident, and why no public disavowal or apology has been issued. As of publication, no response has been received.

In prior inquiries, TX3DNews also asked whether the campaign would commit to preventing similar incidents at future events. Those questions also remain unanswered.

Broader Context

The Weston parade controversy comes amid heightened scrutiny of political messaging in public spaces, particularly at events attended by families. It also follows previous Self town halls where sharp rhetoric and tense exchanges have drawn attention online.

While city officials have condemned the flag’s presence, the absence of a clear statement from the Congressman has continued to draw discussion within TX-03.

For now, the incident remains unresolved — not in terms of who placed the flag, but in how the Congressman chooses to address the optics, accountability, and standards for his public appearances.
