Kura Sushi Headed to McKinney as Plano Plans Outdoor Stage at Legacy West

There’s no shortage of growth happening across Collin County, and two new developments this week highlight how our cities are evolving — from what we eat to where we gather.

First up: sushi fans in McKinney are in for a treat. Kura Sushi, the popular Japanese chain known for its high-tech conveyor belt service, is set to open a new location off W. University Drive in Spring 2025. This will be the company’s 13th restaurant in Texas, joining others in Plano, Frisco, Fort Worth and beyond.

For those unfamiliar, Kura offers a fun, interactive dining experience. Plates of sushi cruise past your table, and diners can order directly from a touchscreen. Eat enough, and you’re rewarded with small prizes — something both kids and adults tend to get a kick out of. The McKinney location will be at 8585 W. University Drive, Suite 150.

According to Kura Sushi’s official website and a report from Community Impact, the opening adds to the brand’s 550+ locations worldwide.

Meanwhile, over in Plano, Legacy West is about to get a little more community-friendly.

At its March 25 meeting, the Plano Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval for a zoning change that would convert part of Water Street — specifically the eastern half that connects Windrose Avenue to Communications Parkway — into 0.18 acres of open space, designed to include an outdoor stage for performances and public events.

City Planner Destiny Woods explained that the western half of the road will remain a private driveway, keeping access open to businesses and the adjacent parking garage. Details are available in city documents shared by the commission.

Whether it’s a new place to eat or a new space to gather, both projects are a sign that North Texas continues to grow — not just in population, but in experiences that bring people together.
