Rep. Keith Self Calls for Select Committee Following Charlie Kirk Assassination

By R.J. Morales | TX3DNews.com

U.S. Rep. Keith Self (R–TX-03) is calling for a congressional Select Committee to investigate what he described as coordinated attacks against conservatives in the wake of the assassination of activist Charlie Kirk.

Self, who represents Texas’ 3rd Congressional District, covering Collin County, Hunt County, and other rural counties in North Texas, posted multiple messages on his official X account linking Kirk’s killing to a broader pattern of violence targeting Republican leaders and conservative institutions.

Timeline of Self’s posts

On September 12, Self published a thread on X highlighting past incidents of violence against prominent conservatives. His post listed:

  • the 2012 shooting at the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., where a gunman wounded a security guard,

  • the 2017 shooting that injured Rep. Steve Scalise (R–LA) and others during a Republican practice for the Congressional Baseball Game,

  • the 2017 assault on Sen. Rand Paul (R–KY) by a neighbor outside his Kentucky home,

  • the 2022 incident in which an armed man was arrested near Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home,

  • two separate attempts on former President Donald Trump’s life, and

  • the September 10, 2025 assassination of Charlie Kirk during a public event in Utah.

Self concluded the post by writing: “We have to put an end to this madness. A Select Committee must investigate the radical left’s coordinated assault on America.”

Support for Trump and Chip Roy

In a separate post, Self echoed remarks from former President Donald Trump and Rep. Chip Roy (R–TX) regarding political violence and calls for investigation.

“President Trump is right. The attacks of the radical Left are strategic, funded, and dangerous. I stand with @chiproytx. We need a Select Committee to investigate the radical left’s anti-American network that is coordinated to attack our way of life,” Self wrote.

On September 15, Self also amplified a message from commentator Benny Johnson highlighting remarks by Sen. JD Vance. In his post, Self wrote: “JD Vance is correct—there is no unity with evil. Thankful for a Vice President who speaks with such moral clarity.”

Additional statement

In another message, Self expanded on his concerns, writing: “We can no longer pretend to be bound together by shared ideals when a well-funded, vitriolic cadre of our fellow Americans and foreign interests are at war with the very values of faith in God, fidelity to our Constitution, and respect for the principles of liberty and Western Civilization that define us as Americans—including, notably, the free speech practiced and exemplified by Charlie Kirk.”

Self’s posts did not reference recent incidents of violence carried out by individuals with far-right affiliations. Federal agencies, including the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, have repeatedly identified racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists—often associated with far-right movements—as among the most persistent and lethal domestic terrorism threats in the United States.

Broader context

Self’s posts place the killing of Kirk within a national narrative of violence against conservatives, aligning with similar calls by Trump and other GOP officials for investigations into what they describe as politically motivated attacks. At the time of publication, no Select Committee had been formally created in the House of Representatives, and congressional leadership had not announced whether one would be pursued.

Background on the Kirk assassination

Charlie Kirk, 31, the founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was assassinated on September 10, 2025, during an appearance at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was shot during an outdoor event and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox called the killing a “political assassination.” The FBI and local law enforcement are conducting an investigation. Authorities have not released a full motive or suspect profile as of mid-September.

Response from Evan Hunt

Evan Hunt, a Democratic candidate for Congress in TX-03, offered a different perspective in a Facebook post responding to the debate.

“This dialogue is not making us safer,” Hunt wrote. “There is extremism on both sides. There is hypocrisy on both sides. There are atrocities on both sides. The power of the State should be used to bring the American people together, not tear us apart.”

Request for comment

TX3DNews reached out to Rep. Self’s office with questions about his proposal for a Select Committee, including what evidence he sees connecting these incidents, what scope the committee would have, whether he has support from House leadership, how he would balance such an inquiry with free speech protections, and whether he would include violence from right-wing extremists as part of the investigation.

As of publication, Self’s office had not yet responded to the request for comment.
