Rep. Keith Self Thanks Laura Loomer for Comments on “Sharia Law”

U.S. Rep. Keith Self (R–TX-03) publicly thanked conservative activist Laura Loomer in a social media post on September 28, repeating his position that “Sharia has no place” in the United States.

The post, made from his official account on X, read:

“Thanks @LauraLoomer for exposing this danger. Sharia has no place in Michigan, in Texas, or in America.”

Self’s message was in response to a thread by Loomer in which she wrote that Democrats in Michigan were “running a Muslim for Senate in 2026 named Abdul El-Sayed.” Loomer alleged El-Sayed had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and “refused to condemn Sharia law.” Loomer did not provide evidence for these claims.

El-Sayed, a Detroit physician and former gubernatorial candidate, officially announced in April 2025 that he is running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. He has denied ties to extremist organizations and has continued to work in public health and political commentary.

Laura Loomer’s Record

Laura Loomer is a far-right activist, commentator, and former congressional candidate who has drawn attention for inflammatory statements and public stunts. She has called herself a “proud Islamophobe,” described Islam as “a cancer,” and argued that Muslims should be barred from holding public office. After a 2017 terror attack in New York, she tweeted that she was late to an event “because I couldn’t find a non-Muslim cab,” a remark widely condemned at the time.

In September 2025, Loomer directed racist insults at U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D–TX) in a series of posts from her X account. In one post flagged by the platform for hateful conduct, she wrote: “It hurts my heart that we have ghetto Black bitches who hate America serving in Congress. In another, she added: “I don’t care to see the videos of ghetto women telling me what they think about my appearance because I called their hoot rat Queen Jasmine Crockett GHETTO. She is ghetto and Low IQ and even President Trump said so.” On September 26, she posted again: “Deez b*tches be trippin fo reelz.”

Her actions have led to bans from major platforms and services, including Twitter (prior to Elon Musk’s reinstatement of her account), Facebook, Instagram, Uber, Lyft, PayPal, Venmo, and GoFundMe.

In 2022, a federal judge ordered Loomer to pay nearly $125,000 in attorney’s fees after she lost a lawsuit against the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which she accused of conspiring with Twitter to suspend her account.

It was this activist — with a history of anti-Muslim remarks, racist insults, multiple platform bans, and failed campaigns — whom Rep. Keith Self publicly thanked in his September 28 post on X.

Rep. Keith Self’s Record

Since taking office, Rep. Self has frequently posted on X about “Sharia law.” His pinned tweet as of late September 2025 reads:

“Sharia has no place in America.”

On September 9, Self posted:

“Islam is tearing the fabric of American values like faith, family, and freedom.”

That message drew criticism from Muslim community leaders, who said the claim was inaccurate and harmful.

Self has not commented publicly on incidents in his district involving anti-Muslim threats or vandalism. In September 2025, a Plano man was arrested and extradited to New York on hate-crime charges after allegedly threatening State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani. Around the same time, a welcome sign at the McKinney Islamic Association was vandalized.

Local Reaction

Muslim leaders in Collin County have said there are no efforts to implement “Sharia law” locally and that residents live under U.S. law.

Dr. Taha Ansari, a McKinney physician and community leader, criticized Rep. Self’s recent rhetoric. “When elected officials use fear-mongering language or single out a demographic, it legitimizes prejudice and emboldens extremists,” Ansari said earlier this month. “Unfortunately, there are folks like Congressman Keith Self who promote hate and spread false information about Islam. He also spread false information about Sharia law, which cannot be implemented in our country.”

Civil rights organizations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), have likewise condemned Loomer’s remarks, calling them Islamophobic.

Broader Background

“Sharia law” refers to Islamic religious principles. In the United States, no jurisdiction has adopted it, and no mainstream political party has proposed doing so. For Muslims in America, it generally relates to private practice such as diet, prayer, charity, and family life, while civil and constitutional law always govern.

Between 2010 and 2017, lawmakers in more than 40 states introduced bills described as “anti-Sharia,” aimed at banning the use of foreign or religious law in courts. Legal experts noted U.S. courts already rely solely on federal and state statutes. In Oklahoma, a 2010 ballot measure banning “Sharia law” in courts was struck down in federal court.

Texas has passed two measures tied to this debate. In 2017, House Bill 45 barred courts from applying foreign or religious law in family cases if it conflicted with constitutional rights. More recently, in September 2025, Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 4211, restricting housing developments described by some officials as “Sharia compounds.” The law was prompted by controversy over a proposed Muslim-friendly community in Collin County.

Current Status

As of September 29, Rep. Self has not released any further comment beyond his post thanking Loomer. His office has not responded to questions about how his remarks may be received by Muslim constituents in Texas’ 3rd Congressional District. TX3DNews reached out to Rep. Self and his staff for comment and is awaiting a response.

  1. Regardless of their comments, officials like Omar constantly make negative comments about American traditions, rights, laws, and religions. This country was founded on Christian principals and our political leaders should abide and not come to America to change our ways to shadow where they came from. If they prefer their home country life, there is no law stating they can’t leave. But if they stay, they need to assimilate into the population. The choice is theirs.
