DALLAS — Three times, the Islanders erased a Dallas lead. In the third period, the Stars finally put the game out of reach.
Jason Robertson scored twice, and Dallas broke a 3–3 tie with three unanswered goals in the final period to beat New York 6–3 on Sunday before 18,532 at American Airlines Center.
The Stars extended the NHL’s longest active winning streak to five games, scored a season-high six goals and improved to 7–3–1. Dallas outshot New York 38–20.
Dylan Hryckowian and Matthew Seminoff, roommates in Austin, made their NHL debuts. Dylan joined his brother Justin, who scored a power-play goal.
Three goals in the third
Dallas began the third with 30 seconds remaining on Nils Lundkvist’s holding penalty. After completing the kill, the Stars took control.
“Our second was a little sloppy,” Robertson said. “Once we got that [penalty] kill, I think everyone reset and understood what we needed to do, what works, and stuck with it and guys put it in the net.”
Wyatt Johnston broke the tie at 4:10, assisted by Lundkvist and Joel Kiviranta.
Robertson followed at 9:45. After a Dallas takeaway, Tyler Seguin fed him for a breakaway, and Robertson slid the puck under Ilya Sorokin’s pads. Roope Hintz also assisted.
Lian Bichsel created the next goal, stealing the puck and feeding Mikko Rantanen for a finish at 13:02. Rantanen extended his point streak to five games.
Robertson has four consecutive multipoint games, matching his career best.
“I thought we possessed the puck pretty well in the third,” Robertson said. “Kept it pretty tight defensively and then some bounces go our way in the neutral zone, and we just come back and attack.”
Dallas continued pressing with a three-goal lead. Chants of “Otter is better” rose from the crowd, and Jake Oettinger finished with 17 saves.
The Stars killed all three Islanders power plays, extending their streak without allowing a power-play goal to five games despite several regular penalty killers being injured.
Islanders erase three leads
Seguin opened the scoring at 11:31 of the first, assisted by Hintz and Jamie Benn. Benn moved within five points of 1,000.
Matthew Schaefer tied it during 4-on-4 play at 13:43, carrying the puck up ice and beating Oettinger high. Robertson answered 49 seconds later, stealing the puck behind New York’s net and scoring on a wraparound.
Kyle Palmieri tied it at 4:01 of the second. Justin Hryckowian restored Dallas’ lead with a power-play rebound goal at 10:52, assisted by Thomas Harley and Johnston, before Brayden Schenn answered at 17:45.
Coach Glen Gulutzan acknowledged New York’s stronger stretch in the second but praised Dallas’ third-period execution.
“We executed at a high-level and created some chances and scored on them,” Gulutzan said.
Islanders coach Pete DeBoer received warm applause during a first-period stoppage in his return to Dallas. Afterward, he pointed to costly mistakes.
“That’s probably the most rush chances we’ve given up the entire year in one game,” DeBoer said.
Roommates make NHL debuts
Injuries created openings for two forwards from Texas, and those opportunities could continue. Gulutzan said he did not expect Radek Faksa, Sam Steel or David Perron back Tuesday, though he thought Steel could return first.
Dylan Hryckowian and Seminoff became the first Stars teammates to make their NHL debuts together since Nick Caamano and Rhett Gardner in October 2019.
Dylan and Justin became the first brothers to play together for Dallas since Jamie and Jordie Benn.
“Super cool,” Dylan said of standing with Justin during the anthem. “It was something we were dreaming about our whole lives. Maybe not playing with each other. But both playing in the NHL. The fact that’s happened now is unbelievable.”
Seminoff’s father flew in Sunday morning.
“It’s super special,” Seminoff said. “It’s been a dream for, obviously, your whole life.”
Dallas outshot New York 9–1 at five-on-five with Seminoff on the ice. Gulutzan grew comfortable enough with both newcomers to separate them in the third and roll four lines.
“I think both guys helped us,” Gulutzan said.
For Dylan, making his debut alongside Seminoff added to the experience.
“That’s my roommate in Austin, so that was really cool to share that moment with him and super happy for him as well,” he said.
